Jari-Matti Latvala was so thrilled on his return to the cockpit as he raced through the Secto-Rally Finland shakedown test.
After three years away, Latvala took on the Toyota Gazoo Yaris Rally1 hybrid car for the first time, dropping the team Principal role for a weekend out racing.
The Finnish driver registered the ninth best time in the 4.48km shakedown test.
“It was so fantastic to drive the Rally1 car. I really enjoyed it. The amount of people I saw on the shakedown was amazing,” said Latvala.
“Our pace was about one second per km slower. If we can keep that for the whole rally, that will be really good and I will be satisfied,” he added.
The 38-year-old is one of the most experienced rally drivers; now making 210 rallies after this weekend’s entry.
He has been behind the wheels of several generation WRC cars.
“I knew from the third run of shakedown that I could improve. I could tell the risks on the fast places but I just don’t want surprises. I will just control the pace,” he said.
The rally proper revs off in the evening with a special stage of 3.48km at the center of Jyväskylä
