The first round of the Zambia national rally championship took place yesterday. Only eight drivers entered for the opening round but with plenty of terminal quick drivers in the top 5 that ensured close competition.
The Zambia National rally defending champions Leroy Gomes and Urshillah Gomes armed with Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 led a clean sweep of the podium for the Gomes racing team, with Kleevan Gomes and Sylvia Malilwe coming in second and Kyle Latife and Riyaz Latife in third.
Farooq Sidique and Pappu Saran captured fifth place behind Aadil Gelu.
Leroy Gomes and Urshillah Gomes didn’t enter their Fiesta R5 in this rally, they drove a Mitsubishi evo 9 after their Ford Fiesta R5 wasn’t ready for the event, Despite having to bear with heating problems they eventually outperformed their rivals to score maximum points to open up their 2020 national Championship account.
Kelvin Mhanga of the wildcat racing team had a bad weekend straightaway from qualifying stages he flipped during qualifying stage On Saturday evening but continued, unfortunately, his campaign was cut short yesterday after SS5 the car gave up.
Kenneth Mukosa also registred DNF.
The second round of Zambia national rally Championship will take place in Ndola Copperbelt province in the first week of April 4th/5th.
