What does this mean to the world of Motorsport??!! Once South Africa was one of the powerhouses when it comes to motorsport on the continent and no doubt has plenty of lethal drivers. Among the talents witnessed you can’t skip Gugu Zulu R.I.P, Hergen Fekken, Jon Williams, Lora sisters, and the list is endless.
Kenyan Manvir Baryan is the only foreign driver to have disputed them in their own back yard in the 2018 African Rally Championship round driving a Skoda Fabia R5.
South Africa has seen the numbers of competitors at the national level dropping down as sponsors also shun away from the sport, which is one of the reasons why the motorsport governing body decided to turn back to Two Wheel Drive [2wd] cars only scores points for the national championship.
Hapa-Sport talked to Mr Willie du Plesis and confirmed that “it’s, unfortunately, true that South Africa has pulled out of African Rally Championship 2020 due to lack of funds, but we’re looking forward to bouncing back in 2021”.
Does this put Burundi anywhere in the picture to replace South Africa as the organisers of the second round or it will be skipped?
Sasol was the last main sponsor of ARC round in the Zulu land but pulled out its sponsorship. York Timbers took Over where Sasol left for one Season.
In 2019 due to lack of Title sponsor the event changed the name to international rally of South Africa, and now since there’s no sponsor on board the event won’t take place!
